What is self care? So many people can define with their routines, but generally, self care is that simple: it’s caring for yourself. Although it may seem tedious, even that weekly meal you get out for yourself is a start. Self care is especially important in our day and age, because it is not understood that teenagers and young adults know what stress is yet “because they haven’t had a real job”. I have heard this before! As a person with a busy schedule since elementary school, I can say that young adults DO understand stress, and it is not just for adults. I think it is super important to partake in some kind of self care routine every day. No matter what time it is, no matter what that thing is, I want you to do it. Self care is so important to do because sometimes we forget to love and care for ourselves. These little routines remind us that sometimes we need a break. Sometimes we need to go to bed early. Sometimes we need to put a face mask on because… well, no, you don’t even need a reason for taking care of your skin! You don’t need to make any excuse for self care, because you come first, in ranking of school, work, extracurricular activities, although it may not seem that way. I swear, it is just that easy. Just one thing.
Here are some things you could do to promote self care in your life!
Compliment yourself in the mirror once a day.
Do something on your long to-do list.
Have a dance party for no reason!
Do a mindfulness meditation.
Set a 5 minutes timer, and declutter.
Remove one person from social media that is toxic or promotes negativity.
Put on a face mask (anyone can do this! It is totally okay to take care of your own skin)
Drink 1 more glass of water.
Eat one piece of candy.
Do something nice for someone (i.e. hold a door, compliment their outfit!)
Take a bath!
There are soooo many more routines you could partake in. Self care is so important in your life, and if you don’t actively partake in a self care activity, please do try! It will change your life. If it seems to hectic for you, start small. Once a week. I’m telling you. It’s worth it to take a break and love yourself.

What can happen if you don’t practice self care? If you don’t practice self care officially, that’s okay. It is best to practice the act of caring for yourself because you get caught up in stress, a bad day. You forget that you are allowed to take breaks. You are allowed to take care of yourself.
What is the true meaning of self-care? Self care is just this simple: it is caring for yourself, and it can be hard when you have a busy life, but truly a self care activity can be as simple as drinking that one more glass of water.
What is self care to YOU? Truly, self-care is different to everyone. In my opinion, it is when you can take a break from all the chaos around you, breathe, and just do something for yourself once in a while.
What are some things I can do that promote self care when my daily schedule is so jam packed I barely have time to breathe? I have had a busy schedule for as long as I can remember. I know that it is hard to practice self care when I barely have time to do my other responsibilities. But I tell you this: nothing, and I mean nothing, is more important than your health, physical or mental. I don’t care if you have a paper due at midnight. If you are dehydrated, or haven’t showered in a week. If you’ve only slept 8 hours in the past 4 days. This comes first. Nowadays, teachers and professors should be understanding of your health. Mental health is equal to physical health. Just as if you were in the hospital, places of education need to understand that health comes first, no matter what. So drink that extra glass of water. Put on that face mask. And then you can finish that paper.
